for those anxious to catalog & brave...
Library Goals for 2005-2006: Catalog all science for all grades and all fiction for grades 5 to 8
I'll show you how to mine the local online library catalog for the dewey number and verify you have the right subject. Let's use Penguins...get into the Pollard Library in Lowell....click on the catalog....put penguins in the general box...scroll through the results for the first apparent non-fiction (this is a judgment call)...if it's in Lowell, the dewey number will be listed immediately under it...if its not in Lowell, click on the Title, then click on Holdings and the dewey number will come up. 598.47
If you're feeling unsure that penguins is the correct subject, click on the title and scan the box on the right - the subject headings used by the library will be at the bottom.
Goiing thru this same process searching for Possum doesn't yield anything that looks like nonfiction, so I click on the first title and see that in the box on the right listing subject, it is Opposum..going back to general seach and putting in Opposum yields a results list that looks more promising - at #9 I click on the title and find the dewey listed - 599.2
This technique is just for the brave and determined - we will be giving workshops using print sources - not focusing on the internet.
