Cataloging Workshop(s) is coming....

Library Goals for 2005-2006: Catalog all science for all grades and all fiction for grades 5 to 8

Now that I'm done with the Simmons MLS, I need to leave the CCA library team with a basic understanding of cataloging. There will be minimal theory for the first workshop and we will concentrate on non-fiction animal books because there are not too may judgment calls as to subject - it's either about penguins or not.

Cataloging requires two pieces of data - the subject and the dewey decimal number. New cataloguers need to have a source that combines these for them - but for various reasons these are hard to find. CCA owns the best one "Subject Headings for Children: A List of Subject Headings Used BY The Library of Congress With Abridged Numbers Added" by Winkel, 1998. (right now it is in my house - will bring it in) It is a reasonable number of pages, 178, and covers people, places, things and concepts. Unfortunately, it is out of print. This means I need to look to a different source and one that I can get at least 3 copies - 2 for the workshop attendees and one for me. The ones for the attendees will become CCA property. I have an order in to examine 3 other resources to determine which is best for CCA's needs and budget. Heads up PTO: I will need re-imbursement ASAP for the workshop to go ahead. We are looking at at between 50$ to 100$ per book - I will be paying for my own. So PTO treasurer/leader, please call me/email if this is workable and when I could expect re-imbursement.

Workshop details: 2 hours
no children
a quiet space with tables and chairs
at least 2 attendees

I am beginning a job search and preparing for a professional conference the end of Jan - so early Feb looks best for me. Keep me in the loop...remember my phone number is in front/back of logbook.
