What makes for a good nonfiction book?

Library Goals for 2005-2006: Catalog all science for all grades and all fiction for grades 5 to 8

Good in this case does not refer to the subject or the editorial content...it refers to to the arrangement of information within the book. Good nonfiction makes it easy to extract the information out of the book and the most useful extraction tool is an index. Any nonfiction book sold to the library market today has an index - it's crucial in its own right but is also needed for information literacy best practices and alignment with the highest in education standards. Many of our donations were originally intended for the home market which emphasized reading for pleasure, rather than information, so that many of our donations do not have indicies.

Nonfiction becomes that much more useful too, when it contains a list of other sources for the reader to consult In the past, these were lists of books or articles - a bibliography. Today, many include websites - a webliography. These are very helpful in guiding student research.
