Computers in Libraries
This is the conference I went to in DC to see what I could learn to get CCA on the fast track to accreditation. ACSI requires an intermediate level of technology access and instruction but CCA is barely even at the basic level. Some of the tools required are a bank of computers with internet access that can be used for information instruction such as how to search web effectively and safely. Also needed is library software that allows the students to search the catalog themselves- this is the absolute minimum requirement of catalog software. Currently the library staff must search for students - this is like always tying a kid's shoelaces for them- simply unacceptable in the long run. (This software was purchased by a nonprofessional librarian before I ever came on the scene.) My goal at the conference was to see what I could find that would help us jumpstart our technological improvements. I learned way too much to put in this one posting but here is a tiny list:
permanent link
- using cheaper software to run on our computers (LINUX)
- jumping right to wireless- skipping the hardwire stage
- using Instant Messaging from librarian to help kids with homework
- how to use web resources to shore up our print collection - free
- how to build a better website for kids
I got my hands on a bunch of reources that I need to sit down and process - which I'll do when my class ends...what class you ask? more on that in the next posting...
