Freebies and from the ALA MidWinter
This is a huge library conference that moves all over the US. This year it was in Boston, so I got to check it out, for the first time. I got to see what's new and what's coming up. As part of the PR, publishers are generous with handouts- which I gathered when appropriate for our libary. Moody was giving away Gun Lake by Travis Thrasher- it looks like a good read for our older middle schoolers. Captstone who publishes works at reading level gr.3-4 for interest level gr. 3-9 is getting into graphic novels; I scored The Boston TeaParty. I also signed up for a free excellent series on medical issues written at a middle school level. The one on asthma first caught my eye because we in New England have the highest rates in the United States. PETA was giving away "Kids can save the world: 101 easy things to do". In our library, works dealing with good stewardship of creation are non-exsistent so I am happy to have this book. I really appreciate the activist angle too. But I hesitate to put it in our collection quite yet, because it advocates a view that it not balanced by anything else in our collection. So I think it will be going into the "not yet" box.
There were a lot more than freebies...I really had to work against coveting...here are some of the goodies that got me dreaming...I am partial to works that deal with tough topics and I found one on Northern Ireland at a reading level gr. 4. It comes in a series that would be wonderful for us. Our social studies works are OLD, out of date, not attractive, containing dated information ...this series on countries would fit our upper elementary curriculum on other countries beautifully...the complete series of 50 books goes for about $800...
The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life was another winner. I can see this being used extensively - maybe even daily - by the middle school. The 6 volume print is $600; it's also available online. It's possible to get a 30 day free trial - the PTO might want to talk this over with the middle school teachers so that all can evaluate it. Hey -its free to dream!
And lastly (before this posting turns into a book) anything from Eerdman's Books for Young Readers. Gorgeous, rich, evocative, deep, many many award winners...we already have been blessed with The Lord's Prayer

Winnifred:
I left a book on the desk "Indian Plains" it is not catalogued. Mrs. Beal would like to take it out for her class. It does not have any catalogue info. Could you please take care of this. Also, when I tried to get into the "h file" it would let me. It said I needed an authorized user or something like that. After hunting and pecking I finally was able to change the file back to "h file". It was only registering
"c file". I hope you understand this. I guess you must have been doing something with the "c drive". It was still in "c drive". Anyway I was able to get into the library file YEAH!!!!!!!! I was about to say OH Know Not Again. That's all for now
God Bless us :-)

Hi Win:
It's me again. I left you another note in the log book. Just for the sake of trying. I logged completely out of the library file and I logged back on again to see what would happen. When I tried to go back in. I went to select h drive and it showed that it was not there. Please come in tomorrow Morning if you can. I would like to show you exactly what I mean.
God bless
