Cataloging errors that will need to be fixed....

Errors are bound to creep in when we are all learning a new skill. At the beginning when the PTO started inputting data into the catalog, without any traning from a librarian, quite a few oddities snuck in. More powerful software would allow us to fix them en masse, but our bargain basement catalog requires us to go in and fix these errors one-by-one. We are doing much better cataloguing now, but it would be good practice to fix these past errors during our slow times. Since I (the librarian) am the one most familiar with assigning subject headings, I will be the one that selects the correct headings. I'll mark up a shelf listing and have the volunteers enter the corrections. (It's not clear though when I'll have the time to do this...)

Fiction, by itself is not a valid Subject. When apt, it can be appended to Subject
History, by itself is not a valid Subject. When apt, it can be appended to Subject
Story, by itself is not a valid Subject. Rarely is it even part of a Subject

None of these are valid Subjects:

Map shows up in many records that are not for Maps

500 catagory has many works that can be moved to more specific numbers in the 500's

There are misspellings in all fields. These should be fixed, as found, by the volunteers.

Mrs. Flint:

Mrs. Freeman the K5 teacher asked me for any books on Martin Luther King Jr., Black history, and Presidents. I went through the books not catalogued yet and found a bunch, plus a video tape of MLK Jr. I went to catalogue them but a lot of the books do not have catalogue info. I will leave the books in the problem box. I let Mrs. F take the video Of MLK JR. There are also books for the older children on the above mentioned subjects.

Nice Job, Jamie! You did exactly what I would have done. Thanks too for the speedy response and comment to me. I will come in close to 5 and pick up the books you selected; I'll return them in the morning tomorrow, Wed.
