What I learned from second graders...
I learned that adult book shelves don't work for them. They and the kindergardners need to see the front cover of a book to figure out if they'll like it. Reading tiny print on a book spine is beyond their reading ability. Once I laid out all the picture books throughout the library, they were very interested. Of course it looked like a bomb had gone off in the room after they all had left - but that was a small price to pay for them to learn that the library is a fun, interesting and useful place for everybody.
So we need to make or purchse appropriate shelving for them. Earlier in the summer I checked out our best equipped local library, Andover, for some ideas. Here is a snippet of info about that from an earlier posting to this blog. Goto the Archives for July 27 and read "The library has moved."
These are two more links to pictures of good shelving for little ones.

So this needs to become an action item for PTO/Admin.
Thanks, Winifred
