Why bother keeping 20 years of National Geos?
Good question. Normally a library will only keep periodicals if there is an accompaning index. The index is key. Without an index, it is impossible to find information among 240 issues. Learning how to use such indexes is an important part of figuring out how to find information. But the kind donor of our 240 National Geographics did not include an index...
But thanks to the Massachusetts Board of Commisioners, we can access an index to National Geographics via the Internet from our local public library. All we need is a library card! Using the library's electronic index allows us to find the articles of interest in the National Geographics - letting us use its beautiful images and maps to the fullest. Those are very valuable to our students because our non-fiction collection is so sparse and the National Geographics is our only pericodical.
